Description
Even in winter, fog is rare in the desert. One morning in early February I set out to paint on location at the Coachella Valley Palm Preserve and found it shrouded in a light ground fog. Shadows were weak and I thought about bailing to go somewhere else. But, given the rarity of fog hereabouts, I thought I'd just give it a shot. Hence this painting...

Oh I am so glad you stayed to paint in the fog... you captured it so perfectly.. I entered my painting of the same scene in the Artist's view of California contest. John.. this is magnificent. f/l/v

I recognized your view immediately. I paint at the Preserve several times a season, and always at this same grove. I actually had to "save" the fog because it burned off while I was working! My conceptual model is Hokusai's 100 Views of Mt. Fuji...but I'll never get to 100 views of this grove. So far, I've got 8, not including the one I tore up because it was beyond salvaging. I really like your take on it--very dramatic!
