Description
At the head of what is known locally as "Araby Cove," in the south end of Palm Springs, CA, sits a small collection of buildings which look very much like a small Hopi Indian village from northern Arizona. It is built from the native rock that covers the eroded surface around it. Just as architecture it is interesting; but on a few days of the year, in spring and fall, when the sun's rays stream parallel to the slope above it and light up the trees around the buildings, the light is magical. It's the kind of light that artists go nuts over. It was on one of those fall days that I first saw the phenomenon. from the deck of a couple whose house overlooks the "Pueblo." It demanded to be painted! They obligingly asked me to paint the scene for them. I hope I have done it justice.
As kind of a side note to explain further why I found it so captivating, I wrote my doctoral dissertation on the small Hopi village of Moenkopi in northern Arizona. The site of this little settlement really carried me back to those wonderful days of fieldwork that led to the dissertation.
