John Ressler

Painting - Watercolor On Paper
Description
On Paris' Ile St.-Louis there's a street named Rue le Regrattier. If you can find "regrattier" in a dictionary, it refers to people who were given the leftovers from the king's table to redistribute at street fairs and markets. It was actually a form of social welfare under the Bourbons. Marie Antoinette's "Let them eat cake" comment may have been less dismissive and condescending than history has ascribed. The title is therefore an exceedingly free translation from the French. Both the number and the facade have been changed to "protect the innocent," as they used to say...as well as to improve the composition.
