Citadel Gate, Les Arcs
Artist
John Ressler
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
The Provençal village of Les Arcs is dominated by a walled hilltop citadel--sort of a minor-league castle. The gateway depicted in this piece was probably the postern gate--the back door--when it was constructed in the 15th century. Today it seems to be the main entrance. All of the buildings within the wall, built from the local limestone, convey a wonderful sense of antiquity and place-ness. This painting started with a small watercolor sketch that, assisted by a few photographs, grew into this oil.
Les Arcs is one of many magical places in the south of France that one oft-times stumbles across quite by accident. We were just looking for a spot from which we could reach Monaco within a couple of hours. We stayed at the citadel's country hotel for four days of exploration! Would've stayed even longer if it weren't for all the other magical places that needed to be explored...
I recently learned that the building on the right is available as a vacation rental.
