The Living Desert, a botanical and zoological park in Palm Desert, CA, is a wonderful place to paint plein air. It's many gardens representing most of the world's deserts tempt painters with rich assemblages of unusual plants and interesting rock formations. This is one of them, the Madagascar Garden. Although mostly painted on location, I beat on it a bit in my studio to punch up the contrast and better define the vegetation. That odd looking tree at top center is a Moringa hildebrandtii, one of the island's many unusual plants. It stores water in its trunk and limbs, accounting for its bloated look.
