Description
Chicxulub is a municipality near the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Since colonial times it has been producing salt in large evaporation ponds strung out along the coast nearby. This is the oldest building in the oldest of the saltworks there. And, if the name Chicxulub seems familiar, it's because the impact crater of the meteor strike that probably caused the extinction of the dinosaurs (65 million years ago) lies just off-shore. It's an interesting spot.
