Description
Before their expulsion in 1492, the Moors lined every river in southern Spain with waterworks, such as this ancient mill in Cordoba, and irrigation systems. Many have been architecturally restored in recent decades, but only a handful are still functional mills. In the distance a Roman-era bridge spans the Rio Guadalquivir, one of Spain's five major rivers. The mile or so of floodplain between the mill and the bridge has been restored to wildlife habitat in recent years, which accounts for all the foliage. Otherwise, the Guadalquivir looks like a big flood control channel, which it is.
